Rooty Tooty Social Networky

Like I mentioned in my previous blog post, social media allowed a whole bunch of people to network together in a way that no physical gathering could ever accomplish. Hundreds of people in as many locations converging together in an exchange of ideas is something only internet social media is able to do.

Facebook is perhaps the best known example of social networking in the modern world. From its infancy as an online social tool to connect university students, it has exploded into a worldwide phenomenon with millions of users across seven continents. With over 800 million indivdual users, Facebook is a treasure trove of opportunity for those seeking to establish and maintain networks with lots of people.

A great example of a Facebook network are interest groups, nothing more than a page that is set up by an enthusiast in, say, blue cars. And everyone on Facebook who loves blue cars can join that group and talk to each other about this common interest. A man from Canada might know a thing or two about making his blue car more blue that people from India might not know about, and the community is made stronger with this sharing of knowledge. Something like this would not have been possible ten or twenty years ago, because this degree of social networking did not exist.

Social networking has come a long way since the days of writing and posting letters, and nowadays it is almost an afterthought when thinking about networking with people you want to share your knowledge with, but just thinking about what is possible today fills me with awe and wonder at what people have accomplished with the internet.
